The most frequent question when a gastroenterologist opens their office or when a clinic sets up an endoscopy unit is: what exactly do I need? The answer is never just "an endoscope" — a functional endoscopy system has between 8 and 12 components that must be compatible with each other, and the choice of each one affects the diagnostic quality and the long-term operating cost.
🖥️Image processor (video endoscope)
The brain of the system — it converts the signal from the endoscope camera into an image for the monitor. It determines the resolution (HD, Full HD, 4K), the available image enhancement technologies (NBI, BLI, LCI), and which endoscopes are compatible. Olympus CV-190 (EXERA III), CV-1500 (EVIS X1), Fujifilm EPX-10 (ELUXEO 10).

💡Light source
Illuminates the inside of the organ through the endoscope's light channel. Two types: xenon (CLV-190, high intensity, requires bulb replacement every 500h) and LED integrated into the processor (Fujifilm ELUXEO — no bulb, lifespan >30,000h). The LED reduces the long-term operating cost.
→ Xenon (CLV-190) vs integrated LED (Fujifilm ELUXEO)
📺Medical monitor
At least 27" monitor with 4K UHD resolution if the processor is 4K (EVIS X1, ELUXEO 10). Without a 4K monitor, the EVIS X1 displays an HD image. Medical monitors have anti-glare coatings, higher color fidelity, and medical device certification — they cannot be replaced by conventional televisions in clinical use.
→ 27–32" · 4K if processor is 4K · Certified medical monitor
🔭Endoscopes (gastroscope + colonoscope)
The minimum unit for a general gastroenterology service: a gastroscope (GIF-H190 or GIF-1TH190 in Olympus) for upper endoscopy and a colonoscope (CF-HQ190 or CF-H190 in Olympus) for colonoscopy. Ideally 2 of each to rotate while the other is being washed and sterilized.
→ Minimum: 1 gastroscope + 1 colonoscope · Ideal: 2+2
🧼Endoscope washer
Mandatory to comply with the reprocessing standard (ANSI/AAMI ST91). Automatic washing with high-level disinfection (HLD) with glutaraldehyde or peracetic acid. Olympus OER-Elite, Medivators DSD-201. Without a certified automatic washer, the service cannot obtain authorization from the Ministry of Health.

🛒Accessories and consumables
Biopsy forceps, sclerotherapy needles, hemostatic clips, polypectomy snares, spray catheters, varicose vein ligation kits, submucosal injectors. Olympus accessories are optimized for their own endoscopes — although there is cross-compatibility with some lower-cost generic brands.

Can I mix Olympus endoscopes with a Fujifilm processor?
No — endoscopes and endoscopy processors are proprietary closed ecosystems. An Olympus endoscope only works with Olympus processors (CV-190 with EXERA III, CV-1500 with EVIS X1). A Fujifilm endoscope only works with Fujifilm processors (EPX-10, VP-7000). Pentax idem with its EPK-i7010 processors. The only exception are some accessories and consumables (biopsy forceps, polypectomy snares) that can be generic brand and be compatible with the working channel of endoscopes of any brand if the channel diameter is the same.
