Computed Tomography in Animals: When It Is Used and What Veterinary CT Detects

Veterinary CT is the most comprehensive imaging study for neurology, oncology, and traumatology in dogs and cats — it detects what ultrasound and X-rays cannot see. Guide to indications and availability in Colombia 2026

CT (computed tomography) in veterinary medicine does exactly the same thing as in human medicine — it generates cross-sectional images of the animal's body using X-rays and 3D computer reconstruction — but in animal patients. The main difference is that the animal cannot cooperate with the immobilization required for the study, so general anesthesia is always needed. This adds an additional risk that the veterinarian must consider before ordering it.

1. Indications for CT in Dogs and Cats

🧠
Neurology — the most frequent indication
CT of the skull and spine is the study of choice for: intervertebral disc herniations (IVDD) that do not respond to medical management before surgery, intracranial tumors (meningioma, glioma — common in brachycephalic breeds), hydrocephalus, traumatic brain injury, and Chiari-like malformation in Cavalier King Charles. For intracranial lesions, MRI outperforms CT in soft tissue resolution — but CT is more accessible and sufficient for many neurological indications.
→ IVDD · Intracranial tumor · Hydrocephalus · TBI · Pre-surgical
🎗️
Oncology — staging and planning
Chest CT for the detection of lung metastases (much more sensitive than chest X-rays — it detects 2–3 mm nodules that X-rays do not see). Abdominal CT for the staging of liver, splenic, and lymphatic tumors. Veterinary radiotherapy planning — increasingly available in specialized centers in Colombia 2026.
→ Lung metastases · Tumor staging · Radiotherapy planning
🦴
Traumatology and orthopedics
Complex fractures of the pelvis, carpus, tarsus, and spine where X-rays do not clearly show the three-dimensional geometry of the fragments. Hip dysplasia — quantification of the Norberg angle and 3D evaluation of the joint for surgical planning (pelvic triple osteotomy, total hip replacement). Osteochondritis dissecans of the shoulder, elbow, or hock.
→ Complex 3D fractures · Hip dysplasia · OCD · Pre-surgical
👃
Nasal cavities and sinuses
Nasal CT is the reference study for nasal tumors (squamous cell carcinoma, nasal adenocarcinoma — common in long-nosed dogs), deep nasal foreign bodies, nasal aspergillosis, and evaluation of the extent of nasopharyngeal polyps in cats. Conventional radiography has very low sensitivity for these lesions.
→ Nasal tumor · Aspergillosis · Foreign body · Nasopharyngeal polyp

2. CT vs. Ultrasound vs. X-rays in Veterinary Medicine — When to Use Each

Modality Best for Limitations Anesthesia
Radiography (X-ray) Chest (heart, lungs in general) · Bones (simple fractures) · Basic abdomen · Initial screening Overlapping structures · Does not distinguish soft tissues · Low sensitivity for small lung nodules Not always
Ultrasound Abdomen (liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, lymph nodes) · Heart (echocardiography) · Pregnancy · Biopsy guidance Does not penetrate bone · Operator-dependent · Poor window in obese animals or those with gas Generally no
CT Neurology (skull, spine) · Lung metastases · Complex orthopedics · Nasal cavities · Surgical planning Ionizing radiation · Mandatory anesthesia · High cost · Not always available in Colombia Yes — mandatory
MRI Central nervous system (better than CT) · Intra-articular soft tissues · Spinal cord Very expensive · Prolonged anesthesia · Very limited availability in Colombia 2026 Yes — mandatory

3. Where is a Veterinary CT Performed in Colombia?

In 2026, veterinary CT is available mainly in university veterinary hospitals (Universidad Nacional, UDCA, CES, Universidad de Antioquia) and in some reference private veterinary centers in Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali. Availability is significantly lower than in countries such as the United States or Spain — many cases requiring it are still referred to these few centers. The cost in Colombia ranges from COP 800,000 to 2,500,000 per study, including anesthesia.

📋 Frequently Asked Questions Also Answered by This Article

How much does a CT scan for dogs cost in Colombia?
What is a CT scan used for in dogs and cats?
When is CT indicated instead of ultrasound in animals?
Does veterinary CT always require anesthesia?
Where do they perform veterinary CT scans in Bogotá?
Does a CT scan detect metastases in dogs better than an X-ray?
Is anesthesia safe for CT scans in older dogs and cats?
Anesthesia in older animals carries a greater risk than in younger animals — especially in brachycephalic breeds (Bulldog, Pug, French Bulldog) and in animals with pre-existing heart, kidney, or liver disease. Before a CT scan in a geriatric or high-risk animal, the veterinary anesthesiologist must perform: a recent complete blood count and serum biochemistry, a cardiac evaluation (auscultation + ECG + echocardiography if there is a murmur), and select the shortest and safest possible anesthetic protocol. The risk of anesthesia must be weighed against the diagnostic benefit of the CT scan — in some cases, a more detailed ultrasound study or diagnostic laparotomy may be safer alternatives.
